(transcription) If you’re chasing a good night’s sleep, then wake yourself up for this. Well, the race is on to rebrand cannabis as a solution for insomnia. So, what does that mean? Here’s Today’s reported Michael Genovese to explain.

For Elizabeth Cook, cannabis oil is quite literally a dream drug, and she’s happy to come clean.

I had my children to deal with, when I told them hat I was doing.

And what did they say?

Mum, we’ve talked about this. You told us not to do drugs! What are you doing?

The retired public servant is among 30 percent of Australians who struggled to sleep. Her’s was a six year battle with insomnia.

Well, I said, I just need to sleep, I need to try it. I’ve tried everything else.

At the age of 70, Elizabeth volunteered in a world-first study at the University of Western Australia, a clinical sleep trial using cannabis oil under her tongue.

What does it taste like?

It’s got kind of a grassy flavour actually. Herbaceous.

It’s surprising, a real surprise at the results, the size of them, the consistency of them.

The university says this double-blind trial is a massive success. For those who actually took the cannabis oil, they saw an increase in their quality of sleep of between 30 and 40 percent. Now, for Elizabeth, that is a dream come true.

I was sleeping right through the night. The alarm was waking me up in the morning. This was a whole new experience for me.

The results encouraged at least one company to start manufacturing cannabis oil locally. They say their biggest hurdle is the drugs reputation.

Nothing of this of what we’re talking about today has anything to do with smoking from a bong or taking weed in the way that you might remember it. It’s about representing medicinal cannabis as another drug, taen in a form that looks like a medicine. You work with a doctor, it’s under prescription.

With the prescribed amount you’re not feeling high when you take it?

No, no, absolutely not.

Zalira Pharmaceutics wants it’s cannabis oil on the market by October for doctors to prescribe to patients who simply cannot sleep.

I was amazed to learn that the fastest growing group of people who are using medicinal cannabis globally… people aged over fifty (years old)., and I think that plays to what cannabis does really well. It manages quality of life issues, helps them sleep better.

It’s not overstating it to say that I’ve actually got my life back.

Doctors don’t have a closed mind to this product at all, we’re quite happy to use it, but like any other drug company, the people trying to sell cannabis derivatives have to show us the science.

It’s been three years since medicinal cannabis was legalised in Australia, but it’s yet to outgrow it’s reputation as a street drug.

Well, it’s interesting with my friends, when they ask me about it they say, oh, how’s it going… how’s it going with the… you know… (laughs) The drugs… oh, you mean the cannabis oil?

Michael Genovese reporting there.

Sleep is essential since many of our bodies processes are repaired and healed when we get some shut eye.

Not sleeping leads to a range of mental and physical health conditions.  A lot of reasons exist why people don’t get good sleep – anxiety and pain are some of the more frequent ones. Cannabis  oil can help people in South Africa with the underlying causes of sleeplessness.

We know how important it is that you get a good night’s sleep, and we’ve seen many of our customers’ sleep improve after taking cannabis oil.

Can Cannabis Oil Help You Sleep?

Evidence points to the role that cannabinoids found in cannabis oil have in relieving both anxiety and pain.  The human body produces endocannabinoids that provide pain and stress relief, and cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant mimic these natural chemicals.

It’s important to treat the underlying causes of insomnia.  Cannabis oil can help one to relax and treat certain types of pain.

CBD in cannabis oil has been studied on its effects on REM sleep. Researchers found that CBD may help to treat REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder.
Symptoms of Insomnia include:

  • Not being able to fall asleep even after lying awake for many hours
  • A feeling of being tired throughout the day
  • Waking up in the middle of the night (people often wake up with a start)
  • Waking up too early
  • The feeling of not having slept properly when you wake up
  • Irritability, depression and anxiety
  • Increased errors or accidents

Other Tips on Insomnia

Caffeine.

Don’t drink coffee, tea or caffeinated beverages (think Red Bull) after one o’clock.

Caffeine has a half life of 5 hours.  This means that half of the caffeine you consume will still be in your body in this time.  Drinking caffeinated beverages results in a cycle of drowsiness and the need for more caffeine.  Although everyone is different, on average one cannot get a good night’s sleep while caffeine is in your system.

Other tips on helping with insomnia include getting some exercise, limiting naps. having a set night-time routine etc.

For many people however, cannabis oil can have a profound impact on one’s sense of calm and peace in order to get a good night’s rest.

How Should I Use Cannabis Oil for Insomnia?

Cannabis oil is strong and should be used according to your personal tolerance.  Start with one drop in the morning and one drop at night, and increase the dosage until you feel comfortable.  (3 Drops is the average that our customers consume.)

Cannabis oil can help with feelings of anxiety throughout the day, limiting negative emotions and allowing things to run easier in your thoughts, allowing for better sleep when the time comes.

Every person has a different number of cannabinoid receptors in their body.  Some people can take a large dose and feel exactly the same as someone taking a lesser amount. So, it’s important to know your own body, and not compare your dosage to the dosages your friends or family are taking, larger or smaller.

Evidence for Using Cannabis Oil for Insomnia

Cannabis oil has been studied for it’s effectiveness in treating sleep disorders, whether you’re in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban.  Here are a few of the studies:

Medicinal Cannabis Used to Treat Insomnia: 2 minutes

Medical cannabis and insomnia

Medicinal cannabis could be used to combat insomnia with a treatment being developed right here in Perth. Interest in the drug is skyrocketing as new uses emerge.

Patient testimonial about cannabis

Anita Gamba hasn’t been able to stand without pain for five years. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 30 years ago and says no other drug compares to medicinal cannabis.

I love it. It’s a friend to my body. I just felt that I was always in remission with my MS. I was always at peace with it.

Medicinal cannabis is being used to treat dozens of different conditions including chronic pain and epilepsy. It’s almost I suppose, a pharmaceutical herbal medicine.

Cannabis oil is a powerful medicine for insomnia

And a world first trial done here in WA found cannabis oil has been found to be a powerful medicine for insomnia. A drug is now being developed and should hit the shelves in September.

So that again, plugs into pathways in your body which which your brain there are receptors for THC and CBD. And when you activate them in the right way that drives the sleep.

While it may be a wonder drug for some, it’s not for everyone.

There are other people where the doses increased. And I said look, I’m just not really getting that much result. And that’s the same with any medication.

Plus, it’s expensive, on average costing between four and ten dollars a day because there’s no government subsidy. Drug companies are always turning up with shiny advertisements and a brand new drug. Doctors just want to see the science that says that it doesn’t harm people, and that it’s better than the drugs that we already have.

You need federal government approval to access the medicine but demand is skyrocketing. In May 2019, There were 1370 approvals. This year, 4133.

Comes with a little bit of baggage in the eyes of many but once you look at the science, then really the baggage cannon should fall away.

Doctors Speaking about Cannabis Oil and Insomnia

Dr Alan Frankel from Santa Monica in California speaks about the use of cannabis oil for insomnia.

Anxiety and insomnia:  Using cannabis for treatment: 2 minutes

Hi. I’m Dr. Alan Frankel.

I’d like to speak to you about the use of cannabinoid medicine in the treatment of anxiety and insomnia.

I’m sure everyone watching this video has been anxious at times and has had trouble falling asleep, or staying asleep. So, what is the difference with insomnia in the use of cannabis for somebody who has trouble falling asleep or staying asleep? The disorders are very, very, different. For patients who have difficulty just drifting off, and once they fall asleep, they stay asleep. A little bit of CBD with THC at very low doses usually takes care of that.

Patients who have insomnia where they’re waking up at 1, 3, and 5 o clock in the morning, and then going back to sleep and waking up just feeling exhausted when they wake up, are waking up at those times because those are the times when we have cortisol spikes from our adrenal glands, and we’re slightly awake. And, if some anxiety metabolites in our blood are circulating around at that time, which is leftover anxiety essentially from the daytime, you wake up, and patients wake up with a start.

Treating anxiety using primarily low dose CBD during the daytime generally translates into helping the patients with early morning awakening to a huge degree. Patients who don’t seem to have anxiety and just drifting off, again, a small 5 milligrams of CBD, perhaps with 5 milligrams of THC will get most people to sleep and some patients just with a little THC.
