What is CBD?

Unlike the main component of cannabis, THC, CBD has no psychological effects. When people first found it, they thought it was an inactive drug. However, more studies have shown that CBD is very important in many ways.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the more than 160 plant cannabinoids identified in Cannabis accounting for up to 40% of plant extracts and the second most abundant component.  CBD was first extracted from marijuana in 1940 by Roger Adams and its structure was teased apart by Raphael Mechoulam and Yuval Shvo in 1963. It’s chemical structure is C21H30O2.

Unlike the main component of cannabis, THC, CBD has no psychological effects.  When people first found it, they thought it was an inactive drug. However, more studies have shown that CBD is very important in many ways.  Firstly, it balances the effects of THC meaning THC doesn’t get people as high in the presence of CBD.  Secondly, it has several effects on the central nervous system, including anti-epileptic, anti-anxiety, and anti-psychotic effects. Thirdly, CBD exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.  CBD is effective in the treatment of movement disorders. The first studies examined the effects of CBD on dystonia (involuntary muscle contractions) and gave promising results. More studies focused on Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease.

Phoenix Tears Oil contains CBD, THC, all the other cannabinoids such as CBG and CBC (more than 160 of these), as well as terpenes.  Phoenix tears is therefore a full extract cannabis oil (some call it THC oil).  For medicinal applications,  taking advantage of the entourage effect is why we recommend a full extract oil as opposed to CBD Oil, which only contains CBD.  Phoenix Tears is commonly misspelt as Fenix Tears Oil.

However, CBD is a potent cannabinoid and gives incredible results when used medicinally.  Here are it’s properties as scientifically studied.

CBD is Anti-Inflammatory
Studies show that CBD lowers serum levels of pro-inflammatory factors such as interleukin-6 and tumour necrosis factor. CBD also increases the levels of interleukin-10, an anti-inflammatory cytokine that has been shown to reduce inflammation throughout the body.

In one study, rats were given CBD and then injected with an inflammatory substance called carrageenan. After analyzing their blood tests, they found that CBD produces both antihypertensive (pain relief) and anti-inflammatory effects.
CBD is anti-seizure
Several studies over the last two decades have reported that CBD has anti-seizure effects. The mechanism of action is not fully understood, but there are several different ways in which CBD may provide its anti-seizure effect.

Some of these include targeting abnormal sodium and calcium channels, reducing tumour necrosis factor, GPR55 receptor antagonism, and adenosine receptor regulation. There is clear evidence to support the use of CBD for seizures, regardless of the responsible mechanism of action.
CBD is anti-anxiety
Recent studies have shown that CBD is an effective treatment option for reducing anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, OCD, and post-traumatic stress disorder. CBD has even been shown to reduce the anxiety caused by speaking in public. Taking CBD with THC can help reduce the effects of THC on anxiety and mental illness.

One of the possible mechanisms of action that causes the anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effect of CBD is the antagonism of 5-HT1a receptors. This receptor is deeply involved in both anxiety and depression. Research on how CBD promotes anxiety effects is still under development, but there are many studies showing how effective it is.
CBD is anti-cancer
There are positive new studies on the use of CBD in the treatment of cancer. CBD has anti-cancer effects in both in-vivo cell lines and in-vitro animal subjects. The ways it prevents cancer activity are:

1.  Inhibits the migration and adhesion of cancer cells
2.  Antiproliferative effect (prevents the spread of cancer cells)
3.  Apoptosis promoting effect (promoting cancer cell death)
4.  Anti-invasive effect

In addition to the positive effects mentioned above, it has also been shown to protect against the negative effects of chemotherapy. CBD shows great potential to block all stages of tumour progression.

CBD is anti-pain

One of the most common reasons to use CBD is to treat nerve pain. Even topical application of CBD oil to the skin has been shown to be an effective treatment for neuropathic pain. CBD has been shown to block pain transmission, activate pathways leading to pain relief, and alter the emotional component of pain.

The way in which CBD works is not yet fully understood, primarily because several possible theories on the way it works have been identified and we’re not yet sure which theory is correct.
